Abstract
Background :The purpose of this study was to examine the association among obesity, waist circumference and bone mineral density in women.

Methods :We evaluated women who had visited an university hospital from January 2006 to March 2006. Subjects were divided into premenopausal and postmenopausal women groups. We evaluated the bone mineral density(BMD) of lumbar spine, both femur neck, blood pressure, body mass index(BMI), waist circumference(WC), smoking, alcohol, exercise, dairy intake frequency and serum lipid profiles, calcium, phosphorus.

Results :Total subjects were 149(100 premenopausal, 49 postmenopausal). From multiple regression analysis, lumbar spine BMD showed positive correlation with weight(P<0.001), femur neck BMD showed positive correlation with weight(P<0.001), negative correlation with WC(P<0.001) in premenopausal women. In postmenopausal women, lumbar spine BMD showed positive correlation with weight(p<0.001), femur neck BMD showed positive correlation with BMI(p<0.05).

Conclusions :It is suggested that abdominal obesity might have a negative effect on bone mineral density in premenopausal women. (Korean J Health Promot Dis Prev 2007 ; 7(3):187~195)
